Intel's
Streaming SIMD Extensions
The Internet Streaming SIMD Extensions consist
of 70 instructions and includes single instruction,
multiple data for floating-point, additional
SIMD-integer and cache ability control instructions.
Some of the benefits to desktop and Internet
applications of Internet Streaming SIMD Extensions
include:
Intel's
Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 and 3
With the introduction of SSE2, the Intel NetBurst®
microarchitecture extended the SIMD capabilities
that MMX technology and SSE technology delivered
by adding 144 instructions. The next-generation
90 nm process-based Celeron D processor introduces
the Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3), which
includes 13 additional SIMD instructions over
SSE2. The 13 new instructions in SSE3 are
primarily designed to improve specific application
areas such as media and gaming.
- Higher
resolution and quality images can be viewed
and manipulated than previously possible.
- High-quality
audio, MPEG2 video, and simultaneous MPEG2
encoding and decoding.
- Reduced
CPU utilization for speech recognition,
as well as higher accuracy and faster response
times.
- Streaming
SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) instructions on
Celeron processor.
- Streaming
SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3) instructions on
Celeron D processor.
Level
1 Execution Trace Cache
The Intel Celeron D processor features 16-KB
data cache compared to 8-KB on the Intel Celeron
processors. In addition to the data cache,
the Intel Celeron D processor includes an
Execution Trace Cache that stores up to 12-K
decoded micro-ops in the order of program
execution. This increases performance by removing
the decoder from the main execution loop and
makes more efficient usage of the cache storage
space since instructions that are branched
around are not stored. The result is a means
to deliver a high volume of instructions to
the processor's execution units and a reduction
in the overall time required to recover from
branches that have been mispredicted.
Non-Blocking
Level 1 Cache
The Celeron processor includes two, separate
16-KB level 1 (L1) caches: one for instruction
and one for data. The L1 cache provides fast
access to the recently used data, increasing
the overall performance of the system.
Level
2 Advanced Transfer Cache
The Advanced Transfer Cache (ATC) consists
of microarchitectural improvements to provide
a higher data bandwidth interface between
the Level 2 cache and the processor core that
is completely scaleable with the processor
core frequency.
Features
of the ATC include:
Non-Blocking, full speed, on-die Level 2 cache
Reduced latency interface to cache data (as
compared to discrete caches)
256-KB
Level 2 Advanced Transfer Cache
The Intel Celeron D processor features 256-KB
L2 Advanced Transfer Cache (ATC) compared
to 128-KB on the Intel Celeron processor.
The Level 2 ATC delivers a much higher data
throughput channel between the Level 2 cache
and the processor core.
Testing
and Performance Monitoring Features
- Built-in
Self Test (BIST), provides single stuck-at
fault coverage of the microcode and large
PLAs, as well as testing of the instruction
cache, data cache, Translation Lookaside
Buffers (TLBs) and ROMs.
- IEEE
1149.1 Standard Test Access Port and Boundary
Scan Architecture mechanism, allows testing
of the Celeron processor through a standard
interface.
- Internal
performance counters can be used for performance
monitoring and event counting.
